Transitioning from AS/NZS 4801 to ISO 45001
ISO 45001:2018 is an international standard for management systems of work/occupational health and safety (WHS/OHS), published in March 2018. The standard is set to replace AS/NZS 4801 and OHSAS 18001 management systems.
The purpose of ISO 45001 is to improve an organisations management of WHS and align it with other ISO certifications such as ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems.
Organisations whose management systems are certified in AS/NZS 4801 or OHSAS 18001 will need to update and migrate their WHS management system to remain certified and conform with the new standards outlined in ISO 45001. While there is no current transition time frame for Australia, implementation of ISO 45001 will help to ensure your organisation is following internationally recognised best practice.
Organisations striving to achieve ISO 45001 certification can be confident that they are doing the utmost for the health and safety of their employees, as well as notifying their customers that health and safety is a priority of the organisation. Having a certified WHS management system will not only improve employee retention, it will also set your organisation apart from competitors.
